Drink Tap Water in a Stainless Steel Bottle 300x195 You Shouldnt Drink Bottled Water for Very Important ReasonsIt is not cheap, bottles are wasted and there is no difference between bottled water and tap water

Contrary to popular belief, especially promoted by bottled water companies, bottled water is just plain water. Just think that the bottle water business reaches $100 billion per year and the incentive is there for companies to promote this water. But in reality, bottled water is a dry well. I would like to list below important reasons why you should discard bottled water:

  1. In terms of cost, the price of gasoline is more expensive, i.e., the price of gas/gallon in the US is around $3, considering that there are 128 ounces in a gallon, the price comes down to 2 cents per ounce. Bottled water can be purchased at 5 cents per ounce taking into consideration that bottled water sells for $1 for 20 ounce size.
  2. As far as health is concerned, in reality, 70% of bottled water in the US is under the FDA scrutiny and never cross state lines for purchase, thus, exempt from FDA supervision.
  3. Check the Environmental Working Group’s National Tap Water database to find out how your tap water is regulated for bacteria and toxic chemicals. You will realize that there is no strong evidence that advocate that tap water is less clean that bottled water.
  4. Using bottled water is equivalent to a big waste material – it produces 1.5 million tons of plastic waste per year. Did you know that plastic needs up to 47 million gallons per year of oil to produce (Food and Water Watch)? While you may say that plastic bottles are recycled, in fact, 80% of these are just discarded or thrown to the garbage, spinning in world’s largest oceans. What does this mean? It means endangering marine life, destroying birds and fish.
  5. Bottled water is popular because people feel that this water tastes better and is safer as opposed to tap water. The middle class or wealthy comprise the majority of drinking bottled water. As a consequence, these categories of people shy away from supporting the upgrade of municipal water treatment for which there is great need especially in California.
  6. It is understood by all that water is a precious commodity, in fact, in this century, it is called “Blue Gold.”  Major corporations are eager to buy groundwater and distribution rights including the bottled water industry.
  7. What would be your contribution? There is definitely an alternative to bottled water which is to buy stainless steel bottles and start using them. If you dislike the taste of your tap water, just purchase very low cost carton filters which will make your tap water taste wonderful and at a much lower cost than bottled water.
